What Is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is an unusual neuromuscular disorder that is caused when the sciatic nerve is being compressed by piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is a flat, band-like muscle located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. This muscle is very important in lower body movement – it enables us to walk and maintain balance.
CAUSES The irritation of the sciatic nerve is the main cause of Sciatica but it is still a mystery why the piriformis muscle sometimes starts to irritate the sciatic nerve. Many doctors think that the condition begins when the piriformis muscle goes into spasm and tightens against the sciatic nerve, squeezing the nerve against the bone of the pelvis.
SYMPTOMS Pain in the lower back and/or buttocksIt may be too painful to sit on the affected buttock. The pain can radiate down the backs of the legs as well.
